'Inside Einstein's Mind': New TV Show Explores Journey to Relativity

Name the smartest person ever. Chances are high that the name Albert Einstein popped into your head. For the past century, Einstein has endured as a public symbol of intelligence and inspiration.

Now, on the 100th anniversary of what is arguably Einstein's greatest accomplishment — the publication of his theory of general relativity — PBS and Nova are celebrating his work and giving viewers insights into the man behind the theory. The show, dubbed "Inside Einstein's Mind," is a 1-hour special that will air on Wednesday (Nov. 25) on PBS at 9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST (check local listings).

"Inside Einstein's Mind" guides viewers through the life and thought processes that led Einstein to publish his theory. One fact that might surprise viewers is that Einstein's genius didn't come in a flash of inspiration. Instead, it was years of hard work that brought Einstein to his understanding of the universe. [Creative Genius: The World's Greatest Minds]

"Einstein's genius is that he really knew how to think hard," said Sylvester James Gates, a professor of physics at the University of Maryland and one of the many experts featured on the show.

It took Einstein nearly a decade to finally perfect his theory, Gates said. "Oftentimes in movies, you see portrayals of science — they start thinking one year, then a couple months later they've got an answer. That's just not the way it works in the real world," he added.

Luckily, viewers won't have to toil away for years in order to understand these tricky topics, because the show uses special effects, interviews with experts and physicists, and thought experiments to show how Einstein worked through questions — questions like "What would it look like to ride a light beam?" Or, "Is time the same for everyone?" Or, "What is gravity?"

General relativity is a theory in physics that describes how gravity works. It's an advanced version of Einstein's earlier theory of special relativity, which explains the relationship between space and time (and spawned his famous E=mc^2 equation). General relativity incorporates gravity into this framework. The theory helps explain how the universe works and is still applied in scientific discoveries, ideas and inventions today — ranging from studies of black holes and the Big Bang to the GPS in your cellphone.

The show also introduces biographical elements of Einstein's life, such as his sometimes-strained relationship with his family and his move to the United States in the 1930s.

"[Albert Einstein was] a person, full of flaws and imperfections," Gates said. Though it doesn't dwell on them, the show highlights the many roadblocks, from both society and Einstein himself, that threatened to keep the scientist from publishing the theory of relativity.

"And yet," Gates said, "there's also this other part of him that established a way for humanity to answer one of our most fundamental questions" — namely, what is this place — this universe that humans live in — and how does it work?

Windfall Films, PBS delve “Inside Einstein’s Mind”

London-based Windfall Films has produced a one-hour special exploring Albert Einstein’s theory of gravitation, General Relativity.

Inside Einstein’s Mind will air in the U.S. on PBS science strand ‘NOVA’ tonight (November 25) and is slated to air in the UK on BBC4 in December under the title Inside Einstein’s Mind: The Enigma of Space and Time.

The program is billed as a “visual exploration through Einstein’s masterpiece” and marks the 100th anniversary of the general theory of relativity. It will give new insights into the creation of the theory and the thought experiments that helped the theoretical physicist come up with the ground-breaking theory.

“Einstein’s general theory of relativity was one of history’s most creative and dramatic revisions of our concepts about the universe,” said Windfall writer and director Jamie Lochhead in a statement. “The centennial provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate the theory that changed modern thinking.”

Windfall Films’ David Dugan served as executive producer on Inside Einstein’s Mind.

Genius is an American anthologyperiod drama television series developed by Noah Pink and Kenneth Biller which premiered on National Geographic. The first season, which aired between April and June 2017, followed the life of Albert Einstein, from his early years, through his time as a patent clerk, and into his later years as a physicist who developed the theory of relativity; the season is based on the 2007 book Einstein: His Life and Universe by Walter Isaacson. The second season, which aired between April and June 2018, followed the life and artistry of Pablo Picasso.

In April 2018, National Geographic renewed the series for a third season. The season was originally supposed to focus on Mary Shelley but this was moved to development to instead focus on Aretha Franklin.[1] It aired in March 2021. In December 2020, the series was renewed for a fourth season, which is set to be released on Disney+ and will follow the life of Martin Luther King Jr..

Synopsis[edit]

The first season chronicles two periods in the life of Albert Einstein: the first as a patent clerk struggling to gain a teaching position and doctorate, the second as a scientist respected for his development of the theory of relativity.

The second season chronicles two periods in the life of Pablo Picasso: the first as a young man first discovering his talent, the second as a celebrated artist struggling with the rise of fascism and the price of fame.

The third season chronicles several periods in the life of Aretha Franklin: as a young gospel singer impregnated at the age of twelve, and as a rising star who was crowned the "Queen of Soul".

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

On April 28, 2016, it was announced that National Geographic had given the production a straight-to-series order, its first ever scripted series. The series was set to be based on the biography Einstein: His Life and Universe by Walter Isaacson and adapted by Noah Pink, who was also expected to co-executive produce. Executive producers were announced to include Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Francie Calfo, Gigi Pritzker, Rachel Shane, Sam Sokolow, and Jeffrey Cooney. Anna Culp was set to co-produce alongside Melissa Rucker. Ron Howard was expected to direct the first episode of the series. Production companies involved with the series were set to include Imagine TV, Fox 21 TV Studios, OddLot Entertainment and EUE/Sokolow.[27]

On April 19, 2017, National Geographic renewed the series for a second season.[28] The subject of the second season was to have been announced during the finale of the first season,[28] but was instead revealed to be Pablo Picasso the day after the finale, when the network and producers did not want to divert attention away from the season finale.[29][30] The second season premiered on April 24, 2018.[31]

On April 18, 2018, National Geographic renewed the series for a third season. The season was initially set to follow the life of writer Mary Shelley. Ken Biller is expected to return as showrunner, executive producer and writer. Also returning are executive producers Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Francie Calfo, Jeff Cooney, Sam Sokolow, Gigi Pritzker, and Rachel Shane. Anna Culp will return as producer. Returning production companies include Imagine TV, MWM Studios, and EUE/Sokolow.[32] On February 10, 2019, it was announced that the subject of the third season would instead be American singer Aretha Franklin, known as "The Queen of Soul".[33] The third season was slated to premiere on May 25, 2020 and air over four consecutive nights,[3][34] but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic and began airing on March 21, 2021.[35][36][37][38]

On December 10, 2020, the series was renewed for a fourth season, which is set to follow the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and will be moving to Disney+.[39]

Casting[edit]

Season 1[edit]

In August 2016, it was announced that Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Flynn would star in the series as Albert Einstein both as an old man and as a young adult, respectively.[40] Additionally, it was reported that Emily Watson would also star in the series and that Michael McElhatton, Seth Gabel, Samantha Colley, Richard Topol, and Vincent Kartheiser had joined the cast.[41] In November 2016, it was announced that Shannon Tarbet, Claire Rushbrook, and Robert Lindsay had been cast in recurring roles.[42] On February 2, 2017, it was reported that T. R. Knight had been cast in the recurring role of J. Edgar Hoover.[43]

Season 2[edit]

On September 6, 2017, it was announced that Antonio Banderas would star in the second season as Pablo Picasso.[44] On November 2, 2017, it was reported that Alex Rich would co-star in the series sharing the lead role of Picasso. It was further reported that Clémence Poésy, Robert Sheehan, Poppy Delevingne, Aisling Franciosi, and Sebastian Roché also joined the cast and that Samantha Colley, T. R. Knight, Seth Gabel, and Johnny Flynn were returning from season one in new roles.[45]

Season 3[edit]

On October 3, 2019, Cynthia Erivo was cast to play Aretha Franklin.[46]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography for season one took place in mid-2016 in Prague.[27] Filming for season two began in November 2017 in Málaga and was expected to take place for over five months in various cities around the world, including Barcelona, Paris, and Budapest.[45][47] Filming for the third season was set to commence in November 2019, for an early-2020 release.[33][46] In March 2020, the production was shelved due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[48] The series resumed production on October 1, 2020.[49]

Music[edit]

Most of Franklin's music in season three was recorded by Erivo. The producers, however, were unable to obtain the rights to use Franklin's biggest songs, "Respect" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman".[50]

Reception[edit]

Critical reception[edit]

Season 1[edit]

The first season received mostly positive reviews. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the series has an approval rating of 83%, based on 29 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Buoyed by a superb performance from Geoffrey Rush, Genius is a compelling origin story of one of history's most renowned scientists."[51] On Metacritic, the season had a score of 65 out of 100, based on 20 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[52]

Science columnist Dennis Overbye of The New York Times described the series as a "tense binge-worthy psychological thriller full of political and romantic melodrama."[53] Overbye further noted that Einstein himself, writing to his sister, wrote, "If everybody lived a life like mine, there would be no need for novels."[53] According to Hillary Busis of Vanity Fair, the film shows, "... Einstein at work ... peers into the über-genius's tumultuous love life (monogamy, he believes, is "not natural") ... his fraught emigration to the United States ...".[54] Busis quotes producer Ron Howard: "When you move past his scientific contributions, Albert's life story—what his youth was like, who his friends were, who his enemies were, his tumultuous love life—is a story people don't know ... I think audiences are going to be riveted as we tell this ambitious and revealing human story behind Einstein's scientific brilliance."[54]

Season 2[edit]

The second season received mixed reviews, but garnered praise for its star, Antonio Banderas. Rotten Tomatoes gave an approval rating of 59%, based on 17 reviews. Its critical consensus reads: "An impressive performance from Antonio Banderas rescues Genius: Picasso from condensed melodrama."[55] On Metacritic, the season had a score of 52 out of 100, based on 10 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[56]

Season 3[edit]

The third season received mainly positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave an approval rating of 73% based on 26 reviews. The critical consensus reads: "Cynthia Erivo captures the spirit of the singular singer with poise and passion - if only Aretha's writing were as strong as her performance."[57] On Metacritic, the season had a score of 67 out of 100, based on 10 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[58]

Reaction from Franklin's family[edit]

The family of Aretha Franklin did not react too kindly to the season. They claim they were not consulted in any part of the production, despite the crew's insistence that they worked with Franklin's estate.[59]

“Einstein’s Quantum Riddle” Featuring Robbert Dijkgraaf Airs on PBS

Scientists are working to decipher and harness the power of quantum mechanics, but the strange nature of entanglement and other quantum phenomena continues to confound researchers, posing new and mystifying questions.

On Wednesday, January 9, 2019, PBS aired “Einstein’s Quantum Riddle,” featuring Institute Director and Leon Levy Professor Robbert Dijkgraaf, whose perceptive commentary provides audiences with a deeper understanding of nature’s quantum language.

Physicists have gradually become convinced that counterintuitive quantum behavior—such as two subatomic particles mirroring changes in each other instantaneously over any distance—is real. Einstein called it “spooky action at a distance,” but today quantum entanglement is poised to revolutionize technology from computers to cryptography.

From an experiment studying quasars at opposite ends of the universe to probing the interactions of elementary particles, researchers are gathering insights that could shatter the laws of space and time and provide a radical new understanding of the universe.

This documentary presents cutting-edge work and considers various implications of the coming quantum revolution that begins with making sense of the seemingly absurd.
