Why does the sound keep cutting out?

No answer just same issue but with LG tv (2013 model). Everything works fine and then all of a sudden the sound is gone but picture is fine. It happens more with watching video via the iPad through to the Apple TV and on to the TV set. The Apple TV is 2012 but updated. The iPad is iPad Pro 9.7”. I don’t have cable - watch tv thru over the air signal. And all movies through Apple TV. It seems to happen whether watching Prime, PBS, Youtube etc. it happens some with just tv over the air but not as much. It just comes and goes…turn it off and back on and it works fine. Sometimes It goes off again in just minutes, other times it’s hours or days. Very frustrating.

I just wanted to chime in because folks were hanging up on Samsung and I don’t believe this is just a Samsung issue. Can’t figure it, I’ve closed and shut down everything, hard reset the iPad, checked setting on the tv to make sure no energy savings or mute was set to come on.

Going to call Apple to see if they have any ideas.. The only thing I know that is different is Verizon (my internet provider) did a recent upgrade to the service (900+ mbps) and some folks had to get new routers but I already had an upgraded router.

Maybe my sound is just going bad on the tv though it’s only a few years old. Best Buy did say the sound on many of the newer tvs don’t last long and he suggested getting a sound bar but it’s seemed to be fine and I don’t have but so much space - just room for tv.

Hi A.Wongy and thanks for reaching out. My name is Joseph. I'm an independent advisor. I'll be happy to help you out today.

I would suggest you refer to the below options and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

Option 1. Change DNS Settings

https://www.groovypost.com/howto/change-dns-set...

Option 2. Temporarily disable Windows Firewall

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402854...

Option 3. Perform a clean boot in Windows

Summary

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program. This is similar to starting Windows in Safe Mode but provides you more control over which services and programs run at startup to help you isolate the cause of a problem.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let me know how it goes.

Thank you!

Hi folks,

Looks like this thread is getting a lot of views recently, so if anyone still running into this could comment and confirm their Microsoft Edge version and Windows build/version, the team would like to dig in to what's going on with your help.

Thanks!

Thanks for confirming! Can you check if you're seeing this in Dev/Beta or only in Canary?

I’m having similar trouble. YouTube audio is fine on my phone but cuts out when I watch on my tv.  Last week it worked fine on tv. I’ve reset everything and it still cuts out.

Hi KathyWilson6,

Are you watching YouTube videos in the YouTube or Microsoft Edge app on your phone?

The trouble is when I watch YouTube on my LG OLED tv. Not “YouTube Tv” but rather plain YouTube. It works fine on our older LG tv and on all computers, tablets and phones. I’m beginning to think it’s directly related to the LG model.

I recommend talking to LG support about this since you are not using Microsoft Edge to watch YouTube videos.

Question:Q:Sound cuts out in some ATV apps on new TV

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Question:Q:

I upgraded from a B6 65" (non-Atmos) to a CX 77" last weekend and I'm having a really strange sound-related issue with my Apple TV 4K HDR.

I use my Apple TV 4K HDR for almost all my viewing and it channels the sound through ARC (or optical) on my Marantz 5010 AVR. However, when watching YouTube TV on the Apple TV, there's often choppy sound, as though someone is repeatedly pressing the mute button. Same with the YouTube app or just sliding around the apps on the Apple TV Home Screen. Does not happen with Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

Plugging the Apple TV in and out doesn't help. Sometimes turning the TV on and off fixes it and sometimes not. What fixes it every time is watching on a non-Atmos movie ("Birdcage") in iTunes and then going back into the YouTube TV. The choppy sound happens using the internal speakers on the TV, so it's not the Marantz. Also tried a different HDMI port on the TV.

Plugging the Apple TV into an Marantz HDMI port and bypassing the TV solves the problem except there's a separate (known) issue with lip sync on iTunes movies when played through an AVR, or at least mine. Plus, I'd like this to work on the TV's HDMI ports! Also, there's no problem when using the LG's native YouTube apps, so perhaps it has something to do with the way the Apple TV is talking to the LG. Note this problem only started when I switched from the B6 to the CX, so it's likely not a malfunctioning Apple TV.

I've tried everything, including turning off Atmos on the Apple TV, changing bitstream to PCM on the LG and even restoring initial settings on the TV and Apple TV. What's so odd is that the only way to fix the sound it seems is to quickly watch a non-Atmos movie on the Apple TV. Even resetting the Apple TV doesn't fix it.

It seems odd that a problem like this could occur with a individual TV. But can't imagine this wouldn't have raised tons of red flags on this forum if it were a bug in the LG.

Could this really be something with the Apple TV?

Verify if there are firmware updates available for your hardware components, especially the new ones (the CX).

I also have a CX. And i find when I’m playing something in atmos anything that’s not in atmos after won’t play properly. Either no sound or stuttering.

Interesting. I wonder if it's the CX or the Apple TV? I am going to try a new HDMI cable (48gbs) to see if that fixes it. Indeed, turning off Atmos in the ATV settings seems to make the issue go away.

I’m using the Belkin 48gbps cable. Makes no difference. If the sound settings are on auto it works better as the LG seems to get the content from Apple in Dolby, pass through it gets it in PCM. However I need this setting on for my e-arc as my PS4 won’t output in 7.1 pcm without this setting on. It works all the time you don’t play an atmos film, as soon as you do you either have to change it back to auto or turn the tv off and on.

You mean auto in the Apple TV or LG settings? I think I have it on auto on the LG. Anyway, this seems like a *huge* bug as Apple TVs are one of the most popular streaming boxes and Apple sets standards. And LG OLEDs are also something of a gold standard. Where can we appeal to get this fixed?

I mean Auto on the LG sound settings. Like I say I need in in pass through and it’s awful on that with the Apple TV. Once you’ve watched something in atmos and go back to a 5.1 or stereo track a lot of the time there’s no sound at all. I tried LG also, the guy didn’t know what an oled was or what e-arc was so I knew I wasn’t going to get far. I haven’t seen many people saying much about it. Was starting to think it was just me then I saw your post and had to comment. I wonder if others are effected. It has to be the Apple TV I would imagine though as using the Apple TV app on LG doesn’t replicate the issue. So I assume it’s an HDMI handshake problem and the LG doesn’t like whatever the Apple TV is doing.

Fascinating. I only have the choppy sound problem in the YouTube TV and YouTube apps as well as on the Home Screen. Again, like someone is repeatedly pressing the mute button. I also find it strange that we would be the only ones with this issue. These are among the two most popular devices out there. Agree something with the Apple TV as using my UHD Blu-ray doesn't trigger the issue. But the solution might come from a firmware fix in either device. I wonder if the problem varies from set to set? I have Amazon set for a return next week. So I'll see if I can make any progress this week.
