History

If you've ever driven a British car made before the 1970s, there's a good chance that you've stared at a set of Smiths gauges. The U.K.-based company supplied speedometers, tachometers and various other gauges for the instrument panels of Austin Healey, MG, Jaguar, Rolls-Royce and just about every other British-based automobile manufacturer.

Founded in London in 1851 by Samuel Smith as S. Smith and Son, the concern got its start making watches and clocks as well as selling jewellery and precious stones. Success allowed them to expand to a larger location and open additional shops in the 1870s when Samuel Smith, Jr. took over. Their reputation had grown near the end of the 19th century such that they advertised as "Watchmakers to the Admiralty and the Royal Observatories." But it was with the dawn of the automobile that Smiths really came into their own.

Although some sources indicate that Smiths built the first odometer in the U.K. in 1900, known as a "mileometer," they didn't start into speedometers until a few years later. This part of the business rapidly grew to become the primary concern and a new publicly traded company was established in 1914: S. Smith and Sons (Motor Accessories) Ltd, with the third generation Allan Gordon Smith as its director and also a patent holder of an early speedometer. As the automotive business took off, so, too, did the aviation business with World War I, a time when the firm supplied aircraft instrumentation, in addition to other products essential to the first mechanized war.

Throughout the decade following the war, Smiths' gauge business flourished, as did other facets of their automobile supply business. They purchased M.L. Magneto in 1919 and K.L.G. Sparking Plugs in 1927, the same year they acquired the rights to produce Jaeger instrumentation for the British market under license. British Jaeger gauges are essentially re-branded Smiths gauges. But in 1930, Smiths sold off all of their businesses related to lighting, starting and ignition, including M.L. Magneto, to Lucas, and the two companies agreed not to manufacture products that the other already had an established foothold in. It's hard to believe such a deal would pass antitrust muster today. If you've ever wondered why a car full of Smiths gauges typically had a Lucas ammeter, it's because Smiths left that business to Lucas.

With the Second World War, Smiths continued to prosper. In 1939, the fourth generation director, Ralph Gordon Smith, presciently opened a factory in Cheltenham, some 100 miles west of London, fearing exposure to bombing at their main plant, which was partially damaged during the Battle of Britain in 1940. During the war, Smiths re-organized once again, this time changing the company name to S. Smith and Sons (England) Ltd, with four divisions: Motor Accessories, Industrial Instruments, Aircraft Instruments and English Clocks. By the 1960s, with an additional marine division, Smiths automotive division was making spark plugs, car radios and entire instrument panels, and the name changed to Smiths Industries.

As with many facets of British industry in the 1970s, the automobile business took a beating, and by 1984, Smiths sold off the motoring division to Lucas, who in turn flipped it to another company before VDO acquired it some years later. The German gauge maker, having acquired a rival, decided to do away with the wholly owned division and shut down the Welsh factory. The local management team acquired the operations and formed Caerbont Automotive Instruments which continues to engineer and manufacture Smiths gauges in Wales.

I purchased a full set of 6 genuine smiths gauges for my Mini and they cost round 2k NZ from the UK with sender units. Sounds awfully cheap to me.

 oh no they're definitely cheap, but to be honest, if they work, I dont see a point in spending so much on originals. my plan is to do a 5-6 clock setup, but theyd cost me around 600pounds vs 60. Isnt is possibe to swap the insides? (i.e the faces with smiths original? im sure you can get replacements online right?)

I used to run a triumph speedo in my mini, it read spot on right up to 90mph. Don't know if I got lucky with the speedo drive ratio of they're calibrated the same as the mini one.

Any rev counter for a 4 cylinder engine should work in a mini. Or one with a switch on the back to select the number of cylinders.

Voltmeter, anything that reads 10 to 14 volts will be fine.

Mechanical oil pressure gauges measure the pressure down a pipe to the engine, so off you can do the plumbing anything will work.

Interesting for sure, however, I gotta wonder at the price just what one might be buying - they maybe OK ??

 

I see that the font used is not the same as that used by Smiths, which I think is unique to Smiths.

 

For most gauges, they can be retrofitted to a Mini from just about any car, however, in regards in particular to mechanical speedos, in 99% of cases, they either need a gearbox or re-calibrating to match the particulars of the car they are being fitted to and this can be very very costly.

yea the font is the real only telltale.... if the size fits, just swap the faces out with originals or print my own? should be possible...i guess :/



Anyone willing to take the bullet and buy a set and see how legit they are? if theyre good id be willing to buy them off the tester. Id buy them myself and check them out, but i have 0 experience in this, and literally picking up my first mini this weekend and need to learn about the car first before i get to electrics etc.

I've found a complete set of Smith's gauges for my HiTech that look right to me but I'd love some input before buying them. Speedo and Tach each about 4.5 to 5 inch diameter chrome bezel, black face. Tach is electric and yellow zone begins at 5500rpm and redzone begins at 6000 (if I remember right). Speedo has integral odometer. Fuel gauge, ammeter, and combination oil pressure/water temp gauges are about 2 inches in diameter, black faces with chrome bezels.

Does that sound right to you experts out there?

I have yet to see a bunch of reliable Smiths gauges, they just don't exist. You can't go wrong with Autometer.

The original Smith gages had 2 1/16" (small) and 3 7/8" (speedo and tach) case diameters. The tach had no redline and read to 8000 rpm. The repro's that we've used were the same, so I don't know the brand that you've found. Not all Smith gages are "equal". Are your small gages mechanical (original) or electric?

They are nice looking knockoffs of the originals used. They are reliable in that they are Autometer...But they are mechanicals..not many are comfortable with bourdon tubes and lines filled with motor oil etc in the dashboard. They are truly smith like.

I have to order some up as well, just a matter of getting the best deal

Kirkham was supposed to be another dealers as well as house of cobras....HOC even got their logo on the face of the ones they sell.

Thumbs upvery cool..

My Smith's gauges suck. I suppose I should feel blessed that any still work at all.. I mean what do you think.. You didn't expect them to make it to 20k did you.. Stewart Warner also makes a nice repro set that can be gotten with a 240 mph speedo.. Enzo has them in his online catalog at www.cobraaccessories.com though I think the Autometer gauges are a little nicer. Good price too..

There have been a number of threads on this topic, and the vendors previously mentioned.; Makes for some interesting reading.

Don't forget TriStateMotorsports.com, as they seem to have the same set for $475

... do your homework

... and customer service DOES matter!

I have do all of the above, and when I can sort out a new dash, TriStateMotorsports will receive my order.

You and I are looking at 760 CDN plus taxes and shipping....wonder if theres lots of duty as well??

I actually need 10 gauges total for my west coast build. The autometer set gets me the closest, and I hear the quality is high, with very good backlighting. At this point it's autometer for me.
