Angled Tip

In addition to creating a high‐leverage fulcrum for prying, the angled tip also provides a pivot point around which to lift and position heavy objects like machinery or tables with fine control.

Comfortable Handle

The generously sized textured handle provides a sure, nonslip grip that lets you comfortably and confidently apply as much force as needed. Made of impact‐resistant polypropylene, it's extremely durable and unaffected by fuels, oils, cleaners, solvents, and most other common chemicals.

Steel Striking Cap

A large, 1 inch diameter solid steel cap on the end of the handle is designed for hammer striking, allowing you to drive the tip into the tightest of spaces. Inserted deeply into the handle, the cap fully contacts the end of the bar, so the force of each hammer blow is transferred directly to the bar itself.

Strong and Reliable Construction

Forged on stout 3/8 inch square stock, this high‐strength bar won't easily flex or twist under load so it's able to deliver consistent leverage. A black oxide finish resists corrosion and won't flake or chip off like painted, powder coated, or chrome plated finishes.

Snap-On Pry Bar Set

It wasn’t until I became a commercial carpenter did I realize just how useful a sturdy and reliable pry bar really is. In addition to demolition tasks, they’re also invaluable when it comes to raising and shifting large pieces of furniture when you need to insert furniture sliders, or to adjust their feet to level them out. All pry bars have roughly the same design, but they do come in a few different styles and sizes, so whether you need an extra-large option for maximum power, or a compact tool for smaller tasks, you should find an option that fits your needs.

What to Consider

When choosing a pry bar, take the time to consider what you’re going to be using it for. If you’re going to be using it primarily for demolition work — like if you have a serious renovation project in your future — you probably want to go with a larger model that will allow you to generate the most leverage possible. If you know you’re strictly going to be prying up planks or flooring, the fork design of the Honeybadger HB56 would be a perfect choice.

If you plan on using your pry bar for more precision tasks, like those involved with automotive or machinery work, you’ll probably want to choose one that has a dedicated handle. A rubber or plastic handle will give you more control, and allow you to apply just the right amount of leverage to whatever you’re working on.

If you’re just looking for an all-around tool to be prepared for whatever prying tasks might arise, a shorter option will probably be fine, like the Stanley Wonderbar.

How We Selected

As a residential and commercial carpenters, I’ve had the opportunity to use nearly every type of pry bar there is. My time spent as part of a demolition crew dismantling entire kitchens and bathrooms (as well as moving heavy furniture with a custom woodworking team), has given me the insight needed to have a good idea of which pry bars are best for what tasks, as well as what brands are reliable and can be trusted to last a long time. I did my best to include a good balance of bar types, and included at least two each of flat, crowbar, and handled options.

STANLEY Wonderbar

Key Specs
Length: 12 3/4 inch

This Stanley bar has been a staple of our tool bag for years, and its 12 3/4-inch size is perfect for a wide range of tasks, while also being short enough to fit in most tool boxes or backpacks. Its thick steel construction and enamel claw makes this an especially rugged tool, and we’ve never had an issue with its durability.

Its rocker end in particular has been essential for adjusting furniture feet, or large appliances like refrigerators or washing machines. It also features three nail slots, making it great for construction and demolition work as well.

  • Low price
  • Durable enamel claw

Best Mini Option

TEKTON 3305

Key Specs
Length: 7.5 inches

I love this little bar for small pry jobs, and for accessing awkward or hard to reach areas. It's also perfect for use on smaller fasteners like brads, finish nails, and small staples that larger bars wouldn’t be able to grasp.

I’ve found that this bar also comes in really handy for use on delicate or fragile surfaces that could be damaged by a larger bar. Its small size is also perfect for keeping in your pocket as you work, or your glove box as part of a mobile toolbox. It won’t be suitable for any medium or heavy-duty tasks, though, and lacks the the leverage needed for hardcore demolition tasks.

  • Compact size
  • Built to last
  • Not ideal for heavy-duty jobs

Best for Heavy-Duty Demolition

HONEY BADGER HB56

Key Specs
• Length
: 56 inches

The head of this bar has a wide, 10.5-inch fork, which makes it perfect for heavy-duty demolition jobs like prying up old flooring, tile, or siding quickly and easily. At 56 inches long, it also allows you to generate a ton of leverage, and the sharp tines are designed to penetrate and slide underneath tight-fitting materials.

It’s more expensive than the other options on this list, but the time saved by its effectiveness could be worth the price, and it should be easier on your back and shoulders than a regular pry bar.

  • Built to last
  • Designed for maximum destruction
  • May be too bulky for smaller tasks
  • Expensive

Key Specs
• Length
: 30 inches

I’ve used Estwing tools for years, and have always had great experiences with their durability and solid construction, which is why I decided to include their gooseneck pry bar to our list. Its classic crowbar-style design makes it a bit more versatile than other models that are more specialized, and the 4.5-pound weight makes it a capable smashing tool as well.

I chose the 36-inch model, but if you prefer something larger for more rugged tasks, or more compact for easier storage, it also comes in 12-, 18-, and 36-inch options.

  • One-piece forged steel
  • Slotted hook for pulling nails

Key Specs
Length: 8, 12, 18, and 24 inches

Although handled pry bar sets like these are typically purchased for automotive use — their slim design and rubber grips are great for positioning and aligning machinery parts — they’re also useful for general prying tasks around the house as well.

Each bar has a strike cap built into the handle, which allows you to use a hammer to pound them into place without damaging the handles themselves. Protective covers for each blade are a nice perk as well, and prevents them from being damaged when not in use, as well as accidental injury to yourself or others.

  • Includes four bars
  • Textured handles provide a sturdy grip
  • Not ideal for extra-large demolition projects

Key Specs
Length: 7, 8, 10, and 12 inches

All four pieces of this kit are constructed of drop forged steel and feature a black finish that resists corrosion, making them both durable, and easy to grip while you work.

They range in size from 7 to 12 inches, so even though there are multiple pieces, they won’t take up too much room in your drawer or toolbox. This kit also includes a dedicated nail puller, which can also be used to grab and pull thin brads and wire, something that most other pry bars won’t be able to do.

If you don’t need as many pieces, this kit also comes in a two-pack of traditional pry bars.

  • Only weighs 3 pounds total
  • Affordable price
  • may be too small for large prying jobs

Best Adjustable Option

Key Specs
Length: 18 inches

The 180-degree indexing head of this bar allows you to customize the angle to suit your specific project, featuring 16 separate positions to choose from.

This versatility makes it well-suited for jobs that fixed bars wouldn’t be able to handle, like removing overhead molding, or other awkward prying angles. It also features a flat striking surface on the rear of the hook, allowing you to use a hammer to really slam it into place.

At just 2.65 pounds, it’s also relatively lightweight, which should cut down on overall arm and shoulder fatigue during those all-day projects.

  • Adjustable head
  • Sturdy grip for maximum control

Best Multiuse Compact Option

Key Specs
Length: 9.5 inches

This handy little bar is designed to be useful for a variety of tasks, with a low, flat body that can be used for heavy-duty scraping jobs as well as prying up boards or molding. The integrated nail hole also makes it easy to grab and pull out nails as you work, leaving both ends free to be used as scrapers.

The hooked end makes for a striking surface as well, allowing you to use it as a chisel-style tool for getting underneath tight materials or chipping off stubborn paint or adhesives.

  • Small size is easy to store
  • Low price
  • Not long enough for extreme prying jobs
