Bob Carver

American designer of audio equipment

Robert W. (Bob) Carver is an American designer of audio equipment based in the Pacific Northwest.

Educated as a physicist and engineer, he found an interest in audio equipment at a young age. He applied his talent to produce numerous innovative high fidelity designs since the s.[1] He is known for designing the Phase Linear , at W per channel the most powerful consumer audio amplifier available in He went on to found the Carver Corporation in , Sunfire in , and the Bob Carver LLC in [2] which was sold to Jade Design in June, [3] However, in December , Bob Carver and Jade Design parted ways.[4]

Amplifier modeling[edit]

Carver caused a stir in the industry in the mids when he challenged two high-end audio magazines to give him any audio amplifier at any price, and he’d duplicate its sound in one of his lower cost (and usually much more powerful) designs. Two magazines accepted the challenge.

First, The Audio Critic chose a Mark Levinson ML-2 which Bob acoustically copied (transfer function duplication) and sold as his Mt amplifier (the “t” stood for transfer function modified).

In , Stereophile magazine challenged Bob to copy a Conrad-Johnson Premier Four (the make and model was not named then, but revealed later) amplifier at their offices in New Mexico within 48 hours. The Conrad Johnson amplifiers were one of the most highly regarded amplifiers of the day, costing in excess of $6, a pair.

In both cases, the challenging amplifier could only be treated as a “black box” and could not even have its lid removed. Nevertheless, Carver, used null difference testing, (null difference testing consists of driving two different amplifiers with identical signal sources and exact levels, but out of phase by exactly degrees. If the amplifiers were % identical, no sound would be heard. If sound was heard, the audio amps had different properties). Bob Carver used "distortion pots" to introduce amplifier characteristics, fine-tuned to null-out any sound differences. His modified amplifier sound was so similar, Stereophile Magazine editors could not tell the difference between his amplifier and one costing more than $6,[5] This amplifier was marketed as the Mt for about $ Carver successfully copied the sound of the target amplifier and won the challenge. The Stereophile employees failed to tell the difference in their own listening room.[5] He marketed “t” versions of his amplifiers incorporating the sound of the Mark Levinson and Conrad Johnson designs which caused him some criticism. In light of this criticism, Carver went on to design the Silver Seven, the most expensive and esoteric conventional amplifier up to that time and duplicated its sound in his M t and later models which sold for some 1/40th the price (around $–$).

This also started Carver's departure from the M-series amplifier to the more robust and current-pushing TFM series amplifiers. The TFM amplifiers were designed specifically to drive the demanding load of the Amazing ribbon loudspeakers. The apex of Carver's amplifier line was the Lightstar, which is now a collectors' item. Only approximately of the amplifiers were made. The original Lightstar amplifier, called the Lightstar Reference, featured a dual-monoblock design, with separate power cords for each channel. A later version, called the Lightstar , featured one power cord & other cost-saving measures to shave approximately $ off the retail price. The two are reported to be sonically identical.

Carver also later sued Stereophile magazine for its alleged bias against Carver products. (Stereophile had first filed suit against Carver for reprinting the magazine's copyrighted material without authorization.) The case was arbitrated with neither side awarded damages.

Product naming[edit]

Carver has used some names in marketing which have other technical definitions:

  • The "auto-correlator" is a multi-band, single-ended dynamic noise filter, as described in U.S. Patent 3,, The Phase Linear audio processor, and the Model preamplifier, which incorporate the same circuitry, have noise reduction in four frequency bands, one in the bass intended to suppress turntable rumble and three in the treble intended to suppress tape hiss and such. The noise filters are controlled by signals derived from bandpass filters, not from a correlation process. Correlation is the comparison of two or more signals, while auto-correlation is the comparison of a signal with delayed versions of itself to determine the degree of similarity at different delay times — useful, for example, to determine the amount of delay that produced an echo.
  • "Magnetic field coil power amplifier" — audio amplifiers of the vacuum-tube era used transformers, incorporating coils of wire, to convert the high-voltage, low-current output of the output tubes to a low-voltage, high-current output suitable for loudspeakers. Output transformers are no longer necessary with amplifiers, including Carver's, that use transistors. Carver's U.S. Patent 4,,, first applied in his model M power amplifier, describes a power supply whose input switches on and off at an ultrasonic rate to adapt to the varying power demand of the amplifier. The innovation is in the power supply, not the amplification circuitry, and in the use of switching, not in the use of a coil or coils.
  • "Sonic holography", as described in U.S. Patent 4,, was first incorporated in the Carver C preamplifier. It enhances stereo imaging by introducing a delayed and equalized signal from the right channel at the left loudspeaker to cancel the signal from the right loudspeaker at the listener's left ear (and vice versa).
  • The "asymmetrical charge-coupled detector" is not the FM detector circuit of tuners, but rather, as described in U.S. Patent 4,,, it is single-ended dynamic noise-reduction processing applied to the noisy left-minus-right component of a weak FM-stereo signal, along with artificial ambiance generation to compensate for loss of ambiance resulting from the noise reduction. The creation of the perfect solid-state amplifier:

1) Full output current from each transistor is always available up to 20 amperes per transistor.

2) Massive output current is available even at low output impedances.

3) Heat sinks are not required.

4) Power continuously doubles down to below 1 ohm.

5) Most of the input power goes to the load, therefore, the power supply can weigh 30 pounds instead of 80 pounds. The amplifier can supply humongous current, massive output power, tremendous voltage, runs cool, and is efficient.

6) Only 12 output transistors are needed per channel for a peak-to-peak current of amps.

7) Bias current and idling current issues become irrelevant and nonproblematic.

8) The Tracking Downconverter multiplies current in the same ratio that the output voltage is reduced and it does so automatically by its intrinsic nature.

9) At high impedances, it delivers high voltage and high current. At low impedances or difficult impedances, it delivers even more current, delivering awesome and difficult to believe amounts.

10) When biwired, Sunfire delivers incredible bass whack and a huge three dimensional sound stage with detail retrieval so stunning that you will often hear musicians breathing.

The long awaited Carver Cube power amplifier is at last available in the UK. Bob Carver, its designer, is not a particularly well known figure in the UK but most people have heard of Phase Linear, which was founded by him, and he also designed its range of products. His special interest has been in high-power amplifiers, with the B and B Phase Linear models now audio legends.

Carver does tend to use pseudo-technical jargon when naming the operating functions in his products, which, to jaundiced British ears at least, smacks of commercial showmanship. However, it is clear from his frequent indulgence in pure research, for example into the audibility of crossover distortion, that his technical base is strong, and not flamboyant window dressing.

In its latest form the Carver M A, or 'Cube' as it has come to be known, has been further refined, particularly with regard to its compatibility with UK mains supply. Taking its most remarkable aspects first, it aims to provide a total of W from a 17cm cube, which may be held in one hand as it weighs just kg (lbs). All this at a price of around £ There we have it in a nutshell – one of the industry's most powerful amps costing less than £1 per watt, and in terms of both dimensions and mass, about one quarter of conventional rivals!

Mystery Play
By designing the M A so that one channel is inverted (negative pulse output for a positive pulse input) and the other non-inverting, the simple expedient of mono feed to both channel inputs allows the output to be taken in bridged mode from the two 'positive' speaker terminals. On peaks into 8ohm speakers I found the M A to be capable of W comparing with the continuous bridge specification rating of some W. In programme terms we arrive at a figure of a mere 33p per watt in bridge mode!

When first announced much emphasis was laid on its mysterious operating principles, and even those skilled in the art were foxed by expressions such as 'Magnetic Field Power Amplifier' – a label that still persists on the faceplate of the M A. However, on the basis of a more conventional interpretation of amplifier principles the circuit can be stripped of its mystique and yet still make for interesting reading.

Some of the more convoluted explanations to have seen print include a representation as a magnetic amplifier arranged as a 'push pull amplitude modulation detector' with negative feedback to increase detector bandwidth and reduce distortion. This is a most cunning reversal of the more conventional representation as, say, a feedback amplifier with auxiliary higher voltage power rails used according to power levels. The supplies are fed from a switched-mode power supply whose regulation is controlled by the predicted load demand.

The M A is claimed to be highly efficient, and the very low heat output even under healthy music drive does confirm this. This efficiency has been achieved by employing a very low idling sliding bias current for the output stage, this representing the main static heat source. If we were to assume that a ±80V power supply is required to produce the W typical output and that the usual idling current is 50mA (the so called A/B bias), then the static dissipation for two channels is 16W, which would warm noticeably a small box like the Cube.

On The Rails
The latter, however, barely increases in temperature above the ambient, and Carver's solution to this apparent paradox relates to the multiple power supplies. When idling, only the lowest supply rail pair are active (the ±25V), and in addition, a low bias current is used, which has the effect of bringing the dissipation down to 2W or so per channel (this figure does exclude power dissipation in other sections of the circuit). The amplifier's efficiency is maintained at higher power levels since it only draws the available supply voltage in proportion to the signal demand. If the full W equivalent power rails were to be permanently engaged, as occurs in a single supply rail pair conventional amplifier, then the dissipation as waste heat in the amplifier would be nearer W.

I feel the expression 'magnetic amplifier' is a misnomer, since the 'magnetic' part of the design does not amplify in the normal sense. Given larger heatsinks, and a beefy 2x80V power supply, the essential amplifier part of the M A can be made to run conventionally and discussed in straightforward terms.

To understand the Cube it is essential to break down the system [see Fig 1] into its fundamental components. If we temporarily ignore the entire area of the power supply including the multiple rails, we find a fully symmetrical push/pull audio amplifier [see Fig 2].

Fig 2 shows the Cube amp’s circuit in simplified form. Look beyond the switched, multiple PSU rails, and we find a fully symmetrical push/pull audio design

The input is DC-coupled to the differential input of an IC op-amp and a second differential pair of discrete transistors takes the signal fairly conventionally to a pair of balanced common emitter stages. These are linked via the main bias network. In simplified form the output stage is essentially a complementary emitter follower.

The innermost pair operate from ±25V rails and constitute a 20W Class A/B linear output stage, and stacked on either side of this pair is another pair of output transistors, commutated or switched by catching diodes and some driver circuitry. These are linked to ±50V supply rails and accommodate the swing of signal peaks between ±25 and ±50V. A third pair, the outermost, are fed from ±80V lines, these using additional driver and bias circuitry for clean operation.

For power levels below 20W, the additional transistors and rails are never invoked, and no difference in operation from a conventional amplifier should be apparent. Only over the upper 10dB or so of the peak full power dynamics will the amplifier almost instantaneously cross over or, more accurately, switch-in the extra transistors and associated supplies required to pass the peak voltage demand without the signal clipping.

When running at full power the 80V supplies feed current to the load via the total stack of series-connected power transistors per half cycle. These – MJ and its companion MJ (now NEC equivalents) – have a massive current capacity and form the impressive array of 12 devices visible through the rear grilles, but due to the series connection an increase in the peak power output impedance of the amplifier is inevitable. Other features include the use of an LED array to show power 'on' and give an indication of power delivery, scaled '0', '–5', '–10', '–20' and '–40dB'.

Pulses 'N' Spikes
The switching speed and input current control to the booster sections of the output stage is fast, and the resultant spikes are fairly narrow and small. Their harmonics are well above the audio range and do not harmonically relate to the audio signal. To reduce radiation of the radio frequency content of the pulses, a fairly large output inductor is installed which dominates the output impedance down to frequencies as low as 15kHz.

Below 20W levels, output switching spikes do not occur but there is another minor source of noise, namely the switching part of the main power supply, and this appears on low level distortion measurements at around –75dB (ref. 0dBW), visible by spectrum analysis in the kHz range. This signal was also found to radiate from the mains supply wiring attached to the amp, particularly in the medium wave band, producing effects on transistor radios akin to a thyristor lamp dimmer at half setting, though with less severity.

Power Supplies
Returning to the amplifier system itself and in particular the power supply, the three power rail pairs (four if the low voltage op-amp supply is considered) are normal in that conventional reservoir electrolytics are employed, these being fed from bridge rectifiers. These are ±μF for the 80V and ±μF for 25V, with an effective ±μF for the 50V rails. It has been previously implied by some commentators that the main supply responds to the audio signal itself, but this is incorrect, because the time constants of reservoirs such as these are infinitely long by comparison with the programme.

PM Architect&#;s and Engineer&#;s Specifications The power amplifier being of two channels, shall deliver W into 8 ohm per channel with both channels operating, and W into 4 ohm per channel with both channels operating. The amplifier shall be capable of bridged-mono operation thereby providing W RMS output into 8 ohm. The amplifier shall be capable of parallel-mono operation for low impedance operation, thereby providing W RMS output into 4 ohm. Each channel shall be equipped with compression circuitry that electronically senses the onset of clipping and engages a specially-designed circuit which virtually eliminates the possibility of driving the amplifier into distortion. A switch shall be provided to defeat The Clipping Eliminator circuit from both the channels. Internal components shall be fan cooled. The fan shall operate at 2 speeds, the speed being determined by internal operating temperatures. The amplifier shall have a thermal shutdown system to protect the power devices from over-temperature operation. This thermal protection system shall be self-resetting.

A protection LED indicator shall illuminate and electronically activated relays shall disconnect the speaker outputs to protect against over temperature, short circuits, DC offset present at the outputs or an internal power supply fault. The amplifier shall provide delayed activation of the speaker output relays at turn-off. The amplifier shall have a voltage gain of dB (V RMS sensitivity), with a removable jumper on each channel to change the gain to B (V RMS sensitivity). Noise shall be at least dB below W/4 ohm A-Weighted. Total harmonic distortion shall be less that % at V sensitivity, % at V sensitivity. The front panel controls shall consist of a master power switch and a fuse-holder containing a replacable 15A slo-blo fuse.
Front panel indicators shall include a Ready LED which shall illuminate red when a protection circuit is activated, five yellow Signal present LEDs and a red Clip/Protect LED.
