The King Stag, Bushey
Booked a table online 24 hours before. Picked my lady up nearby. We were shown and seated at our table. 10 mins, 15 mins, no menus, no contact. 6 staff hovering at the bar. Finally ordered 2 cocktails and asked for a wine list. Cocktails...were mixed enthusiastically by a competent mixologist. I watched it. They looked great, a foamy top, placed on a tray for service. However, the manager or someone with clout, thought they looked great too. Took them off the tray, put them behind the bar and proceeded to take numerous photographs at various angles for his next marketing pitch. Still no drinks. No wine list. No food order. Cocktails arrived after 35 minutes. The foamy head gone, tide mark around the rim. £9.50 each. Bargain. 10 minutes later ordered scallops for starters, 2 mains, 2 glasses of wine. Then asked to move tables as we were too close to a table of 4 next to us. YOU SAT US AT THAT TABLE AND THEY WERE THE SECOND SITTING. Top it all, 10 minutes later, sorry we haven't got any scallops. So disappointed. So many staff. Promise the earth. The service is truly abysmal. We had a KFC. Never again.More

Touches of nutmeg and vanilla fill the nose of this full-bodied and full-flavored wine. The texture is smooth and creamy, while a touch of acidity helps balance all that richness. Jim Gordon

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.

Internationally recognized for gorgeous, pure fruit combined with great elegance, CaliforniaPinot noir thrives among the state’s cooler, coastal zones. Characterized by eclectic flavors and aromas of strawberry, black cherry, plum and potpourri with notes of forest floor, mushroom or black tea, the best California Pinot noir boast a supple texture and good acidity, giving them the ability to improve with age.
Credited with the beginning of Pinot noir’s glory in California, two growers, Joe Rochioli and Joseph Swan in the late 1960s independently planted Pinot noir vineyards in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. Today Sonoma County remains the leading producer of Pinot noir in the state, and Pinot noir is the leading red grape in the county, achieving its highest potential, in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast.
Other coastal appellations where Pinot noir flourishes include Carneros, Anderson Valley and most of the Central Coast.
